Expanded Tradition HKFC 10s Spotlights Global Women’s Rugby Talent

Tradition HKFC 10s

The highly anticipated second edition of the Tradition HKFC 10s Women’s competition is set to electrify the rugby community on 3-4 April at the prestigious Hong Kong Football Club. This year’s event will feature eight elite teams, an increase from the five that competed last year, showcasing an unprecedented level of talent and competition in women’s rugby.

Under the expert guidance of renowned Kiwi coach Mere Baker, defending champions RKS Shogun Rugby (formerly RKS Samurai) are poised to defend their title. The team’s consistent performance and winning track record have positioned them as favourites for the title, further strengthened by the inclusion of USA Rugby 7s star Liz Tafuna in the line-up.

However, they will face stiff competition from the 2023 finalists and current 15s National Champions, Tokyo Sankyu Phoenix.  Enhanced by a roster that includes several players who represented Japan at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2021 Rugby World Cup, Tokyo Sankyu Phoenix is entering the tournament with momentum, fresh off a victory against Western Force in the Super W opener this February. Their strong line-up and recent form bring the determination to challenge for the top spot.

The competition will also see the return of stalwarts HKFC Natixis Ice, back-to-back Women’s Premiership League 15s champions, and Find Rugby Now, the latter having secured two titles, winning South Island 7s, and Give a Ruck 7s (LIT7s Series), and a runner-up position (LIT7s) in the 2023 season, along with Haywards Tropics, all ready to make their mark once again.

This edition gains added excitement from the introduction of three new teams: China Five Stars Women, Papua New Guinea Women, and Shandong Rugby Club. These teams promise to bring fresh energy and dynamic play to the tournament, further enriching the diverse talent pool and enhancing the competitive landscape.

“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with the Hong Kong Football Club for the Tradition HKFC 10s, now entering our 2nd year as the title sponsor” said Tradition’s Asia-Pacific CEO, Adrian Bell.

“Following a highly successful inaugural women’s tournament, we’re excited to announce its expansion, introducing three new teams to an already competitive line-up. This development not only raises the stakes but also enriches the tournament’s appeal and intensity. We eagerly anticipate welcoming fans and teams next month for what promises to be an exhilarating competition, further solidifying our commitment to supporting and growing women’s rugby alongside the HKFC.”
