Tournament Format

The main HKFC Tradition 10s tournament features 16 teams, each with squads of up to 18 players. Matches are 10-a-side, with unlimited subs allowed during a match. There are four trophies to play for, the Cup being the main event followed by the Plate, Bowl and Shield.

The duration of the games is 10 minute halves, with a two-minute interval, except for the finals, which are 12 minutes each half with a three-minute interval.

The round-robin group stages are made up of four pools of four teams. Each pool consists of one team seeded 1-4, one seeded 5-8, one seeded 9-12 and one seeded 13-16. Each team play each other once, with two points awarded for a win and one point per team for a draw.

The top two in each group will progress to the Cup quarter-finals and the bottom two in each group will enter the Bowl quarter-finals.

From the Cup quarter-finals, the four losers will enter the Plate semi-finals and the four winners will progress to the Cup semi-finals. From the Bowl quarter-finals, the four losers will enter the Shield semi-finals and the four winners will contest the Bowl semi-finals.

The winners from each of the semi-finals will progress to their respective finals, which will be held at the end of the final day.

In the event of a tie in a knockout match, sudden-death extra-time will be played. Extra-time is in periods of five minutes and teams will change ends without an interval. The first team to score in extra-time will be declared the winner.

Each team is guaranteed to play a minimum of five games – three in the group stage, a quarter-final and a semi-final.
